Oregon’s distinct merroir. A literary guide to the West. Making the perfect French omelet. High School students in a groundbreaking farm to school program learning to raise, butcher, and cook the whole hog. Urban beekeeping and rooftop honey. A thriving garden and how it nourishes Portland’s tribal community. How to shuck an oyster. Newport’s Dungeness Crabbing Season. The top farm stays in Oregon. FFA: Agriculture’s Bright Future. How two Oregon nonprofits help to build community by providing safe and affordable in-town housing for farmworkers. Horsepower in the vineyard. A remote hike-in lodge in the sprawling Eagle Cap Wilderness.
These are just a few of the topics I’ve covered over the past decade as a freelance writer. I most frequently cover stories that explore the people and places behind what we eat and drink with a healthy dose of travel-related features mixed in. I pursue topics I’m curious about and I’m especially drawn to opportunities to learn something new.
While I’ve lived in Germany, England, and British Columbia, I currently call Portland, Oregon home. An avid explorer of this wild and wonderful state, you can read about adventurous places to visit and the inspiring people that make this state special (from beekeepers and bakers, to oyster farmers and winemakers) that I’ve profiled for Travel Oregon.
Occasionally, I explore the politics of food from programs that provide healthcare for migrant farm workers to tribal programs raising buffalo to restore native food sources. Below you’ll find a selection of some of my work.
